LLM Eligibility Criteria and Exam Pattern: AILET, DU, CLAT etc!

Thousands of students sit for LLM entrance exams each year. With limited seats in the institutions for LLM courses, there is a lot of competition. To help candidates increase their chances of getting into LLM courses, the conducting bodies release the LLM exam patterns.  

LLM Eligibility Criteria

Universities and institutions have the authority to lay the LLM exams’ eligibility criteria for their university/institution. Therefore, the LLM eligibility criteria vary from university to university. The LLM eligibility criteria for some popular LLM exams are given below.

CLAT LLM Eligibility

CLAT LLM Eligibility Criteria Details
Qualifying Examination The candidates must have secured a minimum percentage of marks in an LL.B. degree or an equivalent degree from a recognised university/institution. 
Minimum Qualifying Marks GENERAL / OBC / PWD / NRI / PIO / OCI Category candidates must score a minimum fifty percent (50%) marks or its equivalent score/grade in the qualifying examination.

SC/ST Category candidates must score a minimum fifty percent (45%) marks or its equivalent score/grade in the qualifying examination.

AILET LLM Eligibility 

AILET LLM Eligibility Criteria Details
Qualifying Examination Candidates must have an LL.B. degree or an equivalent degree from a recognized university or institution. 
Minimum Qualifying Marks All candidates must score at least 50 % marks in the qualifying examination, except for SC/ST and PWD candidates. They get a relaxation of 5% in the minimum qualifying marks criteria. They are expected to get at least 45% in their LL.B degree or any other equivalent degree.

DU LLM Eligibility 

DU LLM Eligibility Criteria Details
Qualifying Examination Completed 3-year/5- year LL.B. degree from the University of Delhi or any university recognised by the University of Delhi.
Minimum Qualifying Marks
  • Candidates belonging to General/OBC (creamy layer) must get a minimum of 50% marks in the qualifying examination.
  • For SC/ST candidates, Widows/wards of veterans and wards of serving personnel who received Gallantry awards, the minimum qualifying marks are 45% in the qualifying examination.

CLAT LLM Exam Pattern

The Consortium of National Law Universities administers the Common Law Admission Test. Candidates who pass the CLAT exam will be admitted to undergraduate and graduate legal programmes. Private institutions and all National Law Universities, except for NLU, Delhi, are among the institutions taking the CLAT. The exam is administered once a year. Candidates must take the CLAT PG exam to be admitted to LLM programmes.

AILET LLM Exam Pattern

Like all other NLUs, the National Law University does not accept admissions via CLAT. It holds a separate entrance examination. To get admitted to NLU, Delhi, students must take the AILET exam. The exam format for the AILET LLM is shown below.

University of Delhi’s Faculty of Law offers 2 and 3-year LLM programmes. The exam is administered once every year on a national level.
