Early Life
Owens was born in Crosby, Texas. He attended Crosby High School, where he played high school football for the Vikings.
Owens was a record-setting athlete at Crosby High School. He was a three-time state champion in track & field and also played baseball and basketball. As a senior in 2009, Owens won the 4×100 meter relay at the Texas 4A State Meet with teammates Shawn O’Neal, Charles Moore, and Cedric Jones. In track & field he qualified for state three times, as well as placing second in the long jump twice and third in the triple jump once.
In football as a senior, Owens had 2 interceptions on defense along with over 100 tackles as a safety. He also had 3 sacks, one interception and 2 fumble recoveries, and a punt return for a touchdown. Owens was the only senior in his high school class to play all four years of football at Crosby High School.
Owens also attended Missouri Western State University in St. Joseph, Missouri, where he played for the Missouri Western Griffons from 2009-2013 as a cornerback. Owens redshirted his freshman year (2009) before playing in eight games in 2010, starting one game against Western Illinois University. In 2011 he played 12 games with 10 starts and recorded 31 tackles and 3 interceptions with one touchdown on defense; he had 5 carries for 17 yards on offense and also returned kickoffs for the first time.

In 2012 Owens had a breakout year, starting all 12 games with 11 starts and leading the team in interceptions (7), tackles (79), and pass breakups (23). He was named the All-Missouri Valley Football Conference and Second Team All-American. He was also named Second Team All-MVFC, First Team Academic All-American, and Second Team Academic All-American by College Sports Madness.
Owens led the Griffons in interceptions for the second consecutive year in 2013 with 6. Owens played in all 13 games with 10 starts at corner/safety and finished second on the team with 76 tackles on defense along with 3 forced fumbles, 4 pass breakups, 2 fumble recoveries, 1 interception, and 1 touchdown. He was named First Team All-MVFC and Second Team Academic All-American by College Sports Madness.
Owens was drafted by the Seattle Seahawks in the sixth round (186th overall) of the 2014 NFL Draft. He was signed to a four-year, $2,320,680 contract on May 8, 2014. He played his first NFL game in a Week 2 matchup against the New York Jets, recording 6 combined tackles and a pass deflection in their 30–27 loss.
In Week 9, he recorded a career-high eight combined tackles and made his first career sack on Drew Brees in the Seahawks’ 27–17 win at the New Orleans Saints. On October 10, 2014, Owens made two solo tackles and returned his first interception for a touchdown in the Seahawks’ 20–17 win against the San Francisco 49ers in Week 7. On November 27, 2014, Owens made four solo tackles and broke up a pass in a 23–15 loss at the New York Giants. He finished his rookie season with 25 combined tackles (19 solo) and one interception in 16 games and one start.
