In 2012 Owens had a breakout year, starting all 12 games with 11 starts and leading the team in interceptions (7), tackles (79), and pass breakups (23). He was named the All-Missouri Valley Football Conference and Second Team All-American. He was also named Second Team All-MVFC, First Team Academic All-American, and Second Team Academic All-American by College Sports Madness.
Owens led the Griffons in interceptions for the second consecutive year in 2013 with 6. Owens played in all 13 games with 10 starts at corner/safety and finished second on the team with 76 tackles on defense along with 3 forced fumbles, 4 pass breakups, 2 fumble recoveries, 1 interception, and 1 touchdown. He was named First Team All-MVFC and Second Team Academic All-American by College Sports Madness.
Owens was drafted by the Seattle Seahawks in the sixth round (186th overall) of the 2014 NFL Draft. He was signed to a four-year, $2,320,680 contract on May 8, 2014. He finished his rookie season with 25 combined tackles (19 solo) and one interception in 16 games and one start.
