Beginner’s Guide for Small Entrepreneurs to Building an Effective Team

You might have a great set of experts and professionals in your company, but if there isn’t proper internal communication, you may as well have none. Choosing people with the right skill set for a particular job is undoubtedly essential, but what’s even more important is the way they fit into your company’s culture. Moreover, how they communicate and work with their teammates. Let’s see which aspects are the most important when building an effective team.

Set Clear Business Vision and Values

Regarding building an effective team, there are a few key things to keep in mind. First and foremost, you need to make sure that you have a clear and concise vision for your team. If you don’t know in which direction you want your business or brand to go, you can’t expect it from your employees, too.

Ask yourself what you want to accomplish. What are your team’s core values? Once you have a good understanding of your team’s purpose, it will be much easier to build an effective team aligned with your goals. Alan Varela says that without a shared goal, it will be difficult for team members to work together effectively. It is also important to ensure that all team members are aware of the goals and are committed to achieving them.

This is where intranet communication channels come in handy. You can store all the related documents and guidelines in one place so each team member can always access them and use them as a reference.

Create a Positive and Supportive Environment

Another important aspect of building an effective team is to create a positive and supportive environment. This means you should focus on creating a team culture that encourages open communication, collaboration, and mutual respect. If team members feel like they can trust and rely on each other, they will be much more likely to work together effectively.  An effective team is one that is able to work together harmoniously to achieve common goals.

It is essential to have good communication among team members. Communication is necessary for coordinating efforts and for making sure that everyone is on the same page. It is also important for building trust and for resolving conflicts.

 To create a supportive environment

  • Show interest in their life outside work, like their hobbies, leisure activities, travel, family, etc.
  • Celebrate (small) victories: praise their achievements and show that those matter
  • Equip them with the tools they need to get the task done
  • Think about their professional goals and what new skills they’ll have to master.

We probably can’t stress enough how important it is to keep your employees satisfied and engaged. But unfortunately, disengaged employees are less productive and more likely to take 2.3x more sick days than engaged employees. Furthermore, disengaged employees are more likely to leave the company. For example, in the UK, it led to an astonishing  £70 billion per year in lost productivity. Need we say more?

The next point on our list is equally important.

Don’t Micromanage

It’s not a bad thing, necessarily. After all, you want something done a certain way and to ensure they’re done right. But if you’re constantly looking over your team’s shoulder, you’re not giving them the room to grow and learn. And that can be frustrating for everyone involved.

If you always need to be in control, it might be time to take a step back and let your team take the lead. Micromanaging can be counterproductive, and it can ultimately lead to a feeling of resentment from your team. We aren’t saying you shouldn’t control the team to check the progress, but don’t breathe down their neck.

By taking a step back, you actually let your team collaborate and brainstorm more to find a solution. They just need to know you have their back and can address you in case they need your help. A successful team is, amongst many other things, an independent team.

The next thing you should pay attention to is having a diverse team.

Have a Diverse Team

You need to make sure that you have the right mix of skills and personalities on your team. Having a diverse team in terms of skills and perspectives is important, as this will allow you to tap into a broader range of ideas and solutions. At the same time, you also need to ensure that team members are compatible and can work well together.

Have Fun

All work and no play makes Jack a dull boy. Being able to relax and have fun at work is so beneficial. Primarily psychologically. Allow your team ( and yourself) small moments of “craziness.”

Organize theme days, karaoke, quizzes, trivia, etc. Not only will your team be more productive, but they will get to know each other better and, consequently, enjoy working together more.

Final Thoughts

Building an effective team is essential to the success of any organization. By keeping the above things in mind, you can set your team up for success from the very beginning. By creating a clear vision, fostering a positive environment, and assembling the right mix of skills and personalities, you can build an effective team capable of achieving great things.
